“Rock star Project”- Pick a performer (Brendon Urie) and render an outfit they previously wore (left), and design a new costume and tour concept for them (right).

We were given a period to research and assigned to research and render a male and female costume from that period.

Dracula-  We chose 3 characters to render, I chose the ghost of Mina Grant who is described as barefoot and in her nightgown, Lucy Westfall who is gradually being drained of blood and life by Count Dracula, and the Count himself. I put Dracula in the traditional vampiric red and black while putting Lucy in pink which while a feminine color, is in the red family foreshadowing her relationship with Dracula. Her costume would theoretically start bright and fade as the show goes on and she becomes less lively. Mina is in a dirty, aged white nightgown with a red ribbon around her waist also signifying her tie to Dracula.

This musical, based off of the comics of Allison Bechdel and her journey through adolescence. Allison’s father runs a funeral home and is suppressing his and Allison’s homosexuality. Her parents care a lot about reputation and appearance which leads Allison to have a sheltered childhood. When she goes to college she meets Joan who helps her accept herself and come out to her parents. I used patterns, colors, and textures to show the emotion and vulnerability behind each character. Christian (left) dresses as a typical 80’s boy who wants to be cool , Allison (middle) dresses for comfort and fun, she is more comfortable dressing like her brothers her stipe pattern shows the restrictiveness her parents have on her. John is the youngest and is still dresses by his mom. He likes to be the center of attention.

Helen and Bruce Bechdel run the family Funeral Home business and want to look like the perfect family to anyone who peeks in. They are often dressed formally as if overcompensating for the trouble that goes on behind closed doors.  This version of Allison is for the “Fancy Party” where she is manipulated into wearing a dress that she hates by her father. Is is the opposite of her previous ,and continued, theme of stripes, and goes against her (more traditionally masculine) color palette. Bruce wears dark and busy patterns to show his inner conflict, and Helen dresses up often to attempt to interest Bruce.

Adult Allison (left) is constantly looking over the scene as if re-living the memories as she wrights her comics. She looks professional and confident as she has embraced who she is. Her stripes are cleaner and smaller.

College Allison (right)wears layers and busy stripes as this is the most awkward and confused period of her life. She still rocks the red sneaker from her childhood.

Joan (left) is a fun, femme, and out lesbian. She is artistic, quirky, and sure of herself. She dresses and acts opposite from Allison bright, open and confident.

After “Sex with Joan” Allison puts on one of Joan’s t-shirts over her socks and underwear. It is the most open and sure of herself she has ever felt and the oversized white t-shirt embraces this awakening as Allison embraces her sexuality.
